What conversion is compatible with Windows Video Maker?

I have a camera that films on MPG so I put the video on my desktop and then in imported it to WVM and it only played the audio. What can I do or what can I convert it to, to allow it to play the video as well? I tried converting it to AVI and it said that there was a box not checked, an auto codec thing or something. What do I do? I need to edit it.
